Can You Be Bought?

As women, most of us have fairly strong feelings about women who sell their bodies. We think it's sad. Or maybe we think it's perfectly fine, so long as the girl has the smile and spirit of Julia Roberts and her clients go to polo matches and order half a dozen breakfast options rather than wake the lady from her slumber to see what she wants.

Most of us don't think we sell ourselves.

But some of us have been bought -- in small ways. At least I have. It's not something I love broadcasting -- you certainly won't find me waxing rhapsodic about it in under 140 characters on Twitter -- but it's true.

Here's how I see it: in the same way that we don't go into an interview, utter brilliant asides, and later think, "I really used my intelligence to nail that interview," we tend not to give much conscious thought to the ways we use our sexuality to get what we want.

Unless, of course, we're writing a novel that tackles these themes. And my new novel, Bought, does.

Which means that, while working on it, I had to face the fact that I've worked with agents who have made it perfectly clear that they were far more interested in what was between my legs than in what was between my ears.

I've actively flirted when it meant I could get out of a ticket, into a place I wanted to go, or just have something I wanted. This raises an interesting question - was I bought, or did I do the buying? Sure, I never slept with someone to get ahead but the concept, it must be said, is the same.

So let me ask you: Do you think you've been bought? What messages do you send and do you even know you're sending them?

Take this quiz to find out. The little people that live inside your computer will calculate the results and show you how you compare to the other women out there.

Be honest or else this doesn't work. Remember, no one will see these results but you. Once you get your results, email me and tell me what you think.
